In addition, five genes associated with schizophrenia (ZNF804A, CACNA1C, TCF4, CSMD1, and C10orf26) have all been validated as targets of miR-137 (Kwon et al., 2011; Kim et al., 2012), suggesting that genes involved in schizophrenia susceptibility can be affected by either cis-acting mutations at the gene or via alterations in the miRNA regulatory system. Here, CACNA1C is linked to schizophrenia.
