Initial reports described extracellular HMGB1 in cutaneous lesions (Popovic et al., 2005; Barkauskaite et al., 2007), but, more recently, this DNA-binding protein has been linked to lupus nephritis (Zickert et al., 2012)—where HMGB1 has been suggested as a novel urine biomarker for nephritis activity (Abdulahad et al., 2012). The gene discussed is HMGB1; the disease is lupus nephritis.
