A recent study has shown that E-selectin, a soluble leucocyte adhesion molecule, and sFLT-1, a VEGF receptor, are significantly increased in diabetic patients compared with patients without diabetes during the most severe stages of sepsis; this suggests that patients with diabetes show a more pronounced activation of some endothelial pathways during sepsis, particularly during severe sepsis [11], [12].
