Since oxidative stress and inflammation are key pathologic processes in Alzheimer's disease [1], direct assessment of reactive oxygen species formation was also performed by aminophenyl-fluorescein (APF) assays, while the expression of superoxide dismutase 1 (SOD1) and glutathione-peroxidase 1 (GPx1) was determined by ELISA. The gene discussed is SOD1; the disease is early-onset autosomal dominant Alzheimer disease.
