Moreover, studies published by the Rowley laboratory have shown that BPH nodules exhibited elevated epithelial IL-8 (aka CXCL8) immunoreactivity associated with myofibroblast-rich reactive stroma [23], that IL-8 was sufficient for induction of a fibroblast to myofibroblast transition [23], and that over-expression of KC, the mouse homologue of IL-8, in mouse prostatic epithelium was sufficient to produce hyperplastic prostate epithelial acini associated with a periacinar reactive stroma [24].
