Since both MIF and IL-1β induce neutrophil recruitement [33], [34], and that blockade of MIF activity down-regulates IL-1β [31], [35], it is likely that the decrease of neutrophil influx and IL-1β release in the inflamed areas would result from FSG-mediated inhibition of MIF production in the acute phase of colitis.
