It is known that VEGF-C is a potent enhancer of tumor lymphangiogenesis, leading to increased metastatic spread of breast cancer cells to lymph nodes; however, in our study no significant correlation was found between the level of VEGF-C mRNA expression (low/high) and the number of positive lymph nodes (0 to 3 versus ≥4).
