Ser/Thr-phosphorylation forms of occludin are found concentrated at TJs whereas dephosphorylated occludin is rather detected on basolateral membranes and associated with disrupted TJs in epithelial cells [142,143] as well as in brain endothelial cells in experimental autoimmune encephalomyelitis, a murine model of multiple sclerosis characterized by brain inflammation [144].
