Most risk associations at 8q24 are located 5′ of c-Myc, but the three most significant SNPs for ovarian cancer lie in an apparent gene desert which is >700 kb 3′ of c-Myc, suggesting either that c-Myc might not be the target susceptibility gene for ovarian cancer or that variants in this region are also capable of distant regulation of c-Myc. The gene discussed is MYC; the disease is ovarian cancer.
