To further characterize the presence of TEM, TCM, or TN cells in relation to the extent of atherosclerosis, the presence of CD4+CD44−CD62L+ (TN), CD4+CD44+CD62L− (TEM), and of CD4+CD44+CD62L+ (TCM) was investigated in animal models of atherosclerosis fed an atherogenic diet (Figure 7A).40 Of note, the percentage of TN significantly decreased while that of TEM significantly increased in LDL receptor knockout and apolipoprotein E knockout animals compared with control animals (Figure 7B). The gene discussed is LDLR; the disease is atherosclerosis.
