It is well established that vascular endothelial growth factor-A (VEGF-A) plays a central role in several degenerative and vascular diseases of the retina and choroid, such as diabetic retinopathy (DR) and age-related macular degeneration (AMD), resulting in a significant visual loss among patients with diabetes mellitus [1-3]. This evidence concerns the gene VEGFA and diabetic retinopathy.
