Trypanosoma cruzi, another intracellular parasite of the Trypanosomatidae family, carries the same modified C′-terminal Sti1 recognition motif (MEQVD) while Trypanosoma brucei, causative agent of African sleeping sickness and proliferating extracellularly in the bloodstream, has the canonical MEEVD motif. The gene discussed is STIP1; the disease is human African trypanosomiasis.
