Expression of initiation factor eIF4G is increased in locally advanced breast cancers (52%) compared to small breast cancers (11%) (52% vs. 11%, P = 0.0023), and the overexpression of 4E-BP1 and eIF4G have been proposed to orchestrate a hypoxia-activated switch from cap-dependent to cap-independent mRNA translation that promotes increased tumor angiogenesis and local tumor growth [15]. This evidence concerns the gene EIF4G1 and breast cancer.
