During invasive Salmonella infection, PAMPs and DAMPs initiate the innate immune system leading to activation and recruitment of neutrophils and macrophages and the production of pro-inflammatory cytokines, most notably Interleukin (IL)-6, IL-1β, tumor necrosis factor (TNF)-α, and interferon-gamma (IFN)-γ (Figure 3b) [59]–[65].
