INS and diabetes mellitus: In the field of islet cell transplants, although obese individuals are generally at high risk of diabetes, it has been reported that the high demand for insulin in obese donors without diabetes promotes the necessary increase in islet cell hypertrophy and proliferation.24 Islet cells that remain after pancreatectomy are likely in a similar situation that stimulates islet hypertrophy and thus a compensatory increase in insulin secretion in the endocrine pancreas.
