The difference in plasma glucose concentration between the normoglycemic and hyperglycemic non-preconditioned diabetes groups persisted throughout the reperfusion period: 6.8 ± 1.9 (SD; n = 8) versus 16.4 ± 2.3 mmol/l (n = 7) at 1 hour and 11.6 ± 3.5 (n = 8) versus 19.3 ± 1.6 mmol/l (n = 7) at four hours after reperfusion for the group with and without extra insulin, respectively (p < 0.005 at both time points).
