Others have shown that hypermethylation of APC frequently occurs in gastric cancer, but at a promoter that is not utilized in normal gastric tissue [19] and that RUNX3, whose tumor suppressor gene status is largely based on the fact that it is frequently methylated in gastric cancer, is never expressed in the gastrointestinal epithelial cells that give rise to these tumors [20].
