Introduction of an activating mutation within PIK3CA in MCF10A cells led to an increase in expression of the key glycolytic enzyme Hexokinase 2 (HK2), and a concurrent decrease in expression of the fructose transporter, GLUT5 (Figure 1A). In the HCT116 colon cancer cell background, the presence of a mutated PIK3CA resulted in elevated expression of the glucose transporter, GLUT1 (Figure 1B). The gene discussed is HK2; the disease is malignant colon neoplasm.
