Previous studies have directly implicated the presence of TNF, IL-6, and IL-1β proinflammatory cytokines in the pathogenesis of a number of inflammatory diseases, such as inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) [45], rheumatoid arthritis [46], sepsis [47], and most importantly, in mucositis [8, 13, 21, 34]. This evidence concerns the gene IL1B and irritable bowel syndrome.
