IFNG and Autoimmunity: When rodents are immunized with CFA they often do not develop subsequent autoimmunity, a phenomenon termed “adjuvant immunotherapy.” Interestingly, Kahn and colleagues showed that this protective CFA effect depends on iNOS, as well as on IFNγ and TNFα which are the likely inducers of iNOS within lymphoid tissues (Kahn et al., 2001).
