While angiogenesis, stimulated by VEGF and other factors, can have a protective and regenerative role in response to tissue injury, it has also been linked to chronic inflammation, fibrosis, and tissue injury in both preclinical models and in human autoimmune diseases, including systemic lupus erythematosus, rheumatoid arthritis, vasculitis, multiple sclerosis, and asthma, to name a few [50].
