With regard to the effects of inhaled corticosteroids and long-acting β2 agonists on RV infection and the infection-induced production of pro-inflammatory cytokines, Skevaki et al. [35] demonstrated that the corticosteroid budesonide inhibits the production of inflammatory mediators, including IL-6, IL-8, RANTES and CXCL10 (= interferon gamma inducible protein-10, IP-10), in BEAS-2B cells, and primary human bronchial epithelial cells whereas the long-acting β2 agonist formoterol has no effect on the release of IL-6 (Table 2).
