EGFR and cancer: Recently, successful clinical trials of imatinib, gefitinib/erlotinib and trastuzumab, which are specific for BCR/ABL translocations (18), epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR) mutations (19,20) and HER-2/neu amplifications (21), respectively, have illustrated the ability to develop drugs that target genetic abnormalities and lead to potential streamlined therapies based on the genomic landscape of an individual’s cancer.
