During a 15-year follow-up, the United Kingdom Prospective Diabetes (UKPDS) study showed that 5% of the patients with T2DM had a 2-fold increase in creatinine levels, 20% had macroalbuminuria defined as a urinary albumin concentration ≥ 300 mg/l, 40% developed renal impairment, 45% developed microalbuminuria defined as a urinary albumin concentration 50–299 mg/l and 75% experienced a CV event [9].
