FGF2 and neoplasm: In early development, under hypoxic conditions, tumor neovascularization is observed by intensified microvessel density (MVD) and is regulated by hypoxia-inducible factor-1α (HIF-1α), whose overexpression induces the activation of the angiogenic growth factors, vascular endothelial growth factor-A (VEGFA) and basic fibroblast growth factor-2 (FGF2) (3).
