In contrast to PON1 activity during HIV infection, both in vitro and in vivo studies have shown increased PON2 activity and up-regulation of cellular PON2 mRNA expression upon HIV-1 infection in the CD34+CD4+ hematopoietic cell line TF-1 and in thymocytes derived from the human fetal conjoint thymus/liver hematopoietic organ of SCID-hu mice. Here, PON2 is linked to HIV infectious disease.
