Although mitochondrial haplogroups vary geographically and ethnically across the world, this finding in Caucasians is of particular interest in the light of recent findings of an association between the mitochondrial uncoupling protein 1 and blood pressure in Korean females which is independent of obesity and body mass index (Cha et al. 2008) and the identification of a mutation in mtDNA haplogroup G2a1 across three generations of a Chinese family which was associated with female hypertension (Luon et al. 2011). This evidence concerns the gene SLC25A19 and obesity due to melanocortin 4 receptor deficiency.
