Thy-1 is a membrane glycoprotein that, when expressed, tends to downregulate myofibroblastic features, production of matrix, and contractility in fibroblasts [1], [17]; conversely, loss of Thy-1 expression increases the resistance of fibroblasts/myofibroblasts to apoptosis and increases fibrosis, for example, in the fibroblast foci of usual interstitial pneumonia [18]. The gene discussed is THY1; the disease is idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis.
