This sharply contrasts with the pro-inflammatory cytokines tumor necrosis factor-alpha, IL-1, and IL-6, which showed very good predictive values in dedicated trials [30,31] but whose use in daily life was finally hampered by their short window of expression in plasma, making them difficult to interpret at the bedside in a population of patients in whom the time between the onset of sepsis and the blood test cannot be standardized [32]. The gene discussed is TNF; the disease is Sepsis.
