These years, comparative genomic studies using subtractive DNA hybridization [19] and DNA microarray [20] have identified several M. tuberculosis-specific genomic regions of difference, designated RD1 to RD16, which are absent in the vaccine strains of M. bovis BCG, indicating that the RD-encoded recombinant proteins may be useful for improving the sensitivity and specificity of serodiagnosis TB.
