In conclusion, we demonstrated, for the first time to our knowledge, the involvement of SREBP-2, a lipid metabolism gene, in OA pathogenesis and provided novel evidence for its TGF-β-induced activation through ITGAV/PI3K/Akt pathway, schematically represented in Figure 7, pointing towards the use of integrin inhibitors as possible molecular targets for osteoarthritis treatment. This evidence concerns the gene AKT1 and osteoarthritis.
