In what concerns major depression, Frodl and colleagues [205] have found significantly smaller hippocampal volumes in depressed patients, but also in healthy controls, carrying the Met66 BDNF allele compared with Val/Val homozygotes, concluding that the presence of a Val66Met BDNF polymorphism may predispose human carriers to develop smaller hippocampal volumes and depressive disorders. Here, BDNF is linked to depressive disorder.
