It has been demonstrated that although HPV-specific activated CD4+ and CD8+ cells are detected in tumor-infiltrating lymphocytes (TIL) and tumor-draining lymph node cells (TDLNC) of most cervical cancer patients, only a few IFNγ-producing cells are found in these patients, suggesting that the T cells are functionally inactive [18].
