TGFB1 and CAPN5-related vitreoretinopathy: Since the fibrotic transformation of RPE cells is regarded as the main contributor to various fibrotic diseases of the eye [1,2], the inhibitory action of pirfenidone on TGF-β-induced phenotypic changes of a human RPE cell line provides a rationale for a trial of this potential antifibrotic agent in treating proliferative vitreoretinopathy and other fibrotic retinal disorders.
