GLRX3 and autism: The association between the genes of the γ-glutamyl cycle and autistic disorder is not well studied, although recently a relatively large study using a pathway approach showed a three-SNP joint interaction effect for glutaredoxin, glutaredoxin 3 and cystathione lyase (OR = 3.78, 95% CI: 2.36, 6.04) as well as marginal associations for cystathione lyase, the gamma-glutamylcysteine synthetase, catalytic subunit and glutaredoxin 3 suggesting that variation in genes involved in counterbalancing oxidative stress may contribute to autism [94].
