CD4 and HIV infectious disease: Of note, these potentially compensatory responses to HIV infection do not have the same immunological meaning, considering that de novo proliferation of CD4+ T cells may potentially restore a complete T-cell repertoire; by contrast, the increased proliferation and survival of residual CD4+ T cells, even if able to apparently guarantee T-cell recovery, is not associated with a good quality of immune reconstitution, because of its inability to reconstitute a complete T-cell repertoire.
