In addition to the IAP activity, we and others have previously shown that gut barrier function controls plasma LPS levels in both diet-induced and genetically obese and type 2 diabetic mice, possibly through the up-regulation of two key tight junctions proteins, zonula occludens-1 (ZO-1) and occludin [4], [7], [8], [10], [11]. This evidence concerns the gene ALPI and type 2 diabetes mellitus.
