Above a count of 500 cells/μl, a higher CD4 cell count was associated with a slightly reduced risk of an AIDS event but had little association with the risk of death; hence even earlier treatment with a CD4 cell count above 500 cells/μl might be appropriate for patients with characteristics associated with slower immune recovery—older patients, those with a drug addiction, or co-infected with viral hepatitis [31]–[33]; such patients had a greater risk of progression in our study. Here, CD4 is linked to viral hepatitis.
