Given the unique function of NIS to transport iodide into thyroid cells and the clinical success of using radioiodine for thyroid cancer ablation treatment, it has long been proposed and tested that exogenously induced NIS expression using targeted gene transfer can confer non-thyroid cancer cells radioiodine avidity for radioiodine ablation treatment [2]–[4], [14].
