The best studied ‘eat me’ signal on apoptotic cells is phosphatidylserine (PtdSer) whose outer membrane exposure can be quantified by staining with Annexin V. When neutrophils were recovered from the ear dermis of LYS-eGFP mice 12 hr after infection, 53% of the infected neutrophils compared to 19% of the uninfected neutrophils were Annexin V+ (Figure 4A and B). The gene discussed is ANXA5; the disease is infection.
