CX3CL1 and retinal degeneration: Certain chemokines, such as chemokine (C-C motif) ligand 2 (CCL2) and chemokine (C-X3-C motif) ligand 1 (CX3CL1), appear to be crucial for the accumulation of the subretinal microglia and macrophages observed in AMD and to participate in the development of retinal degeneration as well as in choroidal neovascularization [21].
