While Bulun and colleagues recently proposed a hypothetical model where the strikingly low ratio of ESR1/ESR2 could shift the stimulatory effect of estradiol on the progesterone receptor expression [62, 63], our study showed that the overexpression of ESR2 could precede the pathological and clinical signs of endometriosis; these potentially at-risk specimens grouped together closer to diseased specimens. Here, ESR2 is linked to endometriosis.
