Pulmonary coagulopathy is a characteristic feature of acute lung injury [5] and pneumonia [5, 6] and is the result of localized tissue-factor-(TF-) mediated thrombin generation, impaired activity of natural inhibitors of coagulation [7, 8], and depressed bronchoalveolar urokinase plasminogen activator-mediated fibrinolysis, caused by an increase of plasminogen activator inhibitors [9]. The gene discussed is TF; the disease is pneumonia.
