GSTM1 and malaria: Out of 277 children screened for eligibility, 148 (53%) had a positive blood-slide for P. falciparum, but 98 (66%) had to be excluded for the following reasons: parasite density >200,000/μL (N = 7); parasite density <2,000/μL (N = 25); age <1 year (N = 5); age >10 years (N = 1); Hb <70 g/L (N = 11); severe malaria (N = 2); severe malnutrition (N = 1); refused consent (N = 13); recent intake of anti-malarial drugs (N = 1); not possible to establish an intra-venous line (N = 11); and maximum daily number of admissions completed (N = 21).
