In terms of neurodegenerative disease, recent work showing that VPS35 can associate directly with both soluble N-ethylmaleimide-sensitive factor attachment protein receptor (SNARE) proteins and the sortilin-related receptor SORL1 is thus particularly interesting (Arighi et al., 2004; Bonifacino and Hurley, 2008; Nielsen et al., 2007). This evidence concerns the gene SORL1 and neurodegenerative disease.
