When we compared the risk of the PNPLA3 I148M polymorphism between alcoholic patients with and without HCC, differences in the allele frequency (OR = 2.28; 95%-CI: 1.47–3.55; p<0.001) and the frequency of the homozygous 148M/M genotype (OR = 4.33; 95%-CI: 1.68–11.16; p<0.002) still indicated a significant effect of the 148M allele on progression of alcoholic liver cirrhosis towards liver cancer. Here, PNPLA3 is linked to liver cancer.
