In multivariate analyses adjusted for age, gender, baseline BMI, CD4 counts and the time period initiating HAART, the use of stavudine continued to be associated with increased hazard of developing several toxicities: peripheral neuropathy (HR 2.02; 95% CI 1.35-3.03), symptomatic hyperlactataemia (HR 2.81; 95% CI 1.26-6.31), lactic acidosis (adjusted HR 2.55; 95% CI 0.81-8.00) and diabetes mellitus (adjusted HR 2.07; 95% CI 0.28-15.21) though some of these estimates lacked precision (Table 3). This evidence concerns the gene CD4 and peripheral neuropathy.
