Hypoxia inducible factor-1 (HIF-1) was used by Ritz et al. as a marker of hypoxia in the cortex of young (2 months) and old (9 months) spontaneously hypertensive rats (SHR) and stroke-prone SHR, in their study on hypoxic alterations of nonneuronal populations [42].
