Other female-biased genes that we speculate contribute to the more favorable lipid metabolic profile of females include CYP7A1, encoding cholesterol 7α-hydroxylase, which catalyzes a key regulated step in the conversion of hepatic cholesterol to bile acids and is a target of bile acid sequestrants used to induce CYP7A1 in the treatment of hypercholesterolemia [78], and PPARA, which is activated by hypolipidemic fibrate drugs [79]. Here, CYP7A1 is linked to familial hypercholesterolemia.
