It is well known that during melanoma progression E-cadherin expression is lost [36] and as a consequence of the disrupted high-affinity cadherin/β-catenin interaction β-catenin is released to the cytoplasm and nucleus to increase β-catenin transcriptional activity [37], [38] This point out that as soon as the cell adhesive pressure is lost, i.e. by loss of E-cadherin expression, β-catenin is freed for its function in the cytoplasm and nucleus and this pool is increased. The gene discussed is CDH17; the disease is melanoma.
